2021 Tony Awards Winners List – Deadline

Refresh for updates … A Christmas Carol, adapted from playwright Jack Thorne’s Charles Dickens classic and starring Campbell Scott as Scrooge, won the Tonys for stage design, costume design, lighting and sound design of a play, and also won the award for best original music.

Lauren Patten, winning the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Starring Role in a Musical for her role in Small jagged pill thanked her trans and non-binary colleagues for engaging in a dialogue about her character Jo. “I am so excited to see the action that is coming from them.”

Patten’s character writing drew criticism from both trans and non-binary communities after the production revised the character named Jo from non-binary in a pre-Broadway staging to a gay cis female character for Broadway. The producers then apologized and described the steps they plan to take to address the issue.
