Crawfish celebrated at festivals in Laurel, Hattiesburg

PINE BELT, Miss. (WDAM) – Laurel and Hattiesburg held festivals celebrating crayfish on Saturday.

In Laurel, thousands of people hit West Oak and Front streets for Community Bank’s downtown “Crawfest.”

It was a competitive event, featuring three dozen teams.

There was also live music.

The festival was co-hosted by Sertoma de Laurel and Laurel Main Street.

“It’s fun to be with the kids and family and we see lots of friends here,” said Patrick Windham, one of the Crawfest attendees.

“It’s very good, it’s amazing, (the crawfish) they’re very good,” said Shakeria Wilson, another festival visitor.

A panel of judges chose the Lori Hearn State Farm Insurance team as the winner of the “Crawfest” festival.

The public prize was awarded to the Kiwanis club team.

Meanwhile, in Hattiesburg, thousands more people visited Walthall Park for the annual “Downtown Crawfish Jam”.

There was unlimited crawfish and lots of live music.

“I’m absolutely impressed, the atmosphere, the food, the beer, it’s all a mix,” said David Leiva, a Downtown Crawfish Jam attendee.

The jam is a major fundraiser for the Hattiesburg Historic District Association.
