Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo Wins Multiple Awards at 2022 Communities in Bloom Symposium

The region is named winner of the International Challenge in the Medium/Large category rewarded with 5 flowers!

The 2022 Communities in Bloom Symposium took place this past weekend and Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo walked away with several awards!

The region received an overall rating of 5 Flowers – Silver and was named the winner of the International Challenge in the Medium/Large category with special mention for cultural and natural heritage and the involvement of indigenous communities. The region has also received two awards for outstanding achievement, the Heritage Conservation Award and the National Capital Commission’s Plant and Flower Show Award.

The winners were announced on October 22 at the 2022 National Symposium and Awards Ceremony held in Victoria, British Columbia. The region competed in the International Challenge category with Oost-Vlaanderen, Belgium, Citta di Alba, Cuneo, Italy, Leduc AB and Stratford, ON.

After their visit and assessment, Community in Bloom judges Bob Ivison and Tina Liu wrote:

“First Nations play a vital role in the history of Wood Buffalo. The RMWB has demonstrated an excellent example of a positive truth and reconciliation process with indigenous communities in the region. Evidence of respectful relationships between all members of the municipality, including Indigenous, non-Indigenous, immigrant and other community groups, is evident throughout. Aboriginal representation on City Council demonstrates that joint leadership and collaboration of Aboriginal culture is the way of life in the RMWB.

Indigenous heritage is preserved and enhanced through public infrastructure, such as crosswalks, murals and artwork in public facilities, schools, businesses and green spaces. Multilingual signs in Cree, Dene and English are used in the RMWB. The many events organized by different Aboriginal communities are well supported and advertised by the municipality and service groups with substantial participation from local government officials. Aboriginal traditions are exemplified through these events and storytelling opportunities to engage other members of the community.

Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo will host the 2023 National and International Blooming Communities Symposium and Awards in September. More details will be shared as they become available.
