Non-profit organization works to end racism in the community

Jenessa Jimoh, Executive Director and Founder of Diversity Inclusion Values Action or DIVA for short, joined us on the show to share the importance of community organizations, having those difficult conversations with your family and those around you about matters involving race. Jimoh started this nonprofit as a way to create a safe space and community for those to come together and share their life experiences. The word DIVA is synonymous with diversity, inclusion, values and action. This non-profit organization aims to help end racism in Utah schools. Jimoh discusses the fact that for schools to create a safe environment for their students, teachers must be trained to uncover their unconscious biases. By doing this, faculty will be more confident in interacting with each student.

Racism is still rampant in Utah schools. Jimoh is working alongside Rep. Sandra Hollins to end racism in the classroom. Jimoh hopes to gain support from Derrick Kitchen, who is currently working to pass the crown law in Utah. This will make hair discrimination against African Americans illegal.

DIVA is currently fundraising to fund its start-up costs for upcoming projects. With this project, they collected student testimonies from all K-12 students about racialized events and trauma that happened to them in Utah schools. The goal is to meet with school administration and staff to create a new school policy that addresses racial harassment. In many cases, he was a victim of the racial slur transgression who suffered the consequences either by dropping out of that school altogether, being suspended, or never feeling comfortable or welcome in his learning environment. . No child should ever feel like this.

DIVA is $500 away from its fundraising goal! If you want to contribute to Diversity Inclusion Values Action, their Venmo is diva_slc.

The DIVA website will be closed until April while a new website is designed. If you or a friend would like to learn more about this organization, visit their Instagram for more information.
