The Brain Gain Excellence Awards will be presented in November

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — The Business Journal is adding to our Brain Gain franchise an awards program designed to recognize the region’s best workforce development initiatives and new business ideas.

A call for entries has been launched for the first Brain Gain Excellence Awards. Readers are encouraged to complete a brief online form on BusinessJournal to nominate businesses, community organizations or individuals in one of two categories:

• Workforce development. To be awarded to a business or community organization that has had a unique and positive impact on job creation, training and development and/or employee recruitment.
• Entrepreneurship. To be awarded to an individual or group of owners who leveraged local resources to launch a new idea into a promising business.

The deadline for nominations is September 26. Self-nominations are accepted. Winners will be featured in the November and mid-November issues, available in print and online.

One winner in each category will get full stories about their accomplishments. They will also receive a Business Journal prize package consisting of an advertising package on our various news platforms and a 60-second custom branded video produced by The Business Journal content studio.

“Since launching Brain Gain three years ago, we have seen and heard of so many positive efforts and initiatives to develop and promote career and business opportunities here at home. And while we’ve covered quite a few of them, we felt it was time to add an awards program to shine a light on the best of the best,” said Business Journal editor Andrea Wood.

The Brain Gain franchise is underwritten by sponsors who understand that hiring and retaining skilled workers is a challenge for every business, and that entrepreneurship is essential for economic redevelopment.

The main sponsors are the Mahoning Valley Manufacturers Coalition and the Farmers National Bank. Coalition members include Eastern Gateway Community College, The DeBartolo Corporation, Simon Roofing, Youngstown State University, Youngstown Business Incubator, Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley, and Mahoning County Career and Technical Center.
