Antonio Vivaldi’s masterpiece The Four Seasons, performed by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Te Tira Pūoro o Aotearoa, arrives at Kirikiriroa Hamilton on May 20-21.
The orchestra will also present Open Doors, a free series of family events on May 21.
Vivaldi’s Four Seasons is one of the most recognizable and beloved pieces of music from the Baroque era, a favorite and frequently heard concert in film and television.
Written in 1723, the groundbreaking set of four string concertos was largely forgotten until a new recording in 1947 became a bestseller. A 1989 recording by virtuoso violinist Nigel Kennedy reached number three in the UK charts and is to this day one of the best-selling classical albums in history.
The NZSO Four Seasons Concert in association with Sky City Hotels Group will also feature a performance of tango legend Astor Piazzolla’s Vivaldi-inspired tour de force The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires.
Four outstanding NZSO violinists – Anna van der Zee, Malavika Gopal, Simeon Broom and Alan Molina – will each play a season as soloists in The Four Seasons and The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, led by NZSO concertmaster Vesa-Matti Leppänen.
The 2021 NZSO North Island Four Seasons Tour has been a hit with audiences and critics alike.
“It was an utterly cohesive performance – the poetry, the soloists, the orchestra, the brilliant duet of Vivaldi and Piazzolla. What might have seemed old and stale reappeared as lively and fresh. In short, a triumph.” – Dominion Post
“Sometimes amazing…the four soloists led the NZSO’s incredible line-up of musicians.” – Guardian Manawatu
Open Doors is at Gallagher Concert Chamber and Gallagher Playhouse Theater on Saturday, May 21, from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Families should not miss two live performances (10.30am and 11.30am) of NZSO’s popular Storytime for Kids, where Aotearoa New Zealand’s children’s stories are read to the accompaniment of original music by New Zealand composer Claire Cowan, played by NZSO players. .
Throughout the day, Open Doors also offers NZSO Foundation masterclasses and workshops, starting with the Vesa-Matti Leppänen Violin Masterclass at 10:30am. Other masterclasses include cello with NZSO associate principal cello Ken Ichinose and flute with associate principal flute Kirstin Eade.
Among the workshops, there are jam sessions that people can register and participate in. These include sessions for string instruments, woodwinds and percussion, and brass and percussion.
